The Oyo State Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Dr Wasiu Olatunbosun, has pledged his total support for the successful hosting of the third edition of the Annual World Headdress Celebration, describing the initiative as laudable.
Olatunbosun gave the assurance on Thursday, October 22, 2026, when the leadership of Omo Yoruba Atata Socio-cultural Initiative (OYASI) paid him a courtesy visit as part of preparations for the forthcoming celebration.
The third edition of the event is scheduled to hold on Monday, December 28, 2026, at the Single Tennis Court, Lekan Salami Sports Complex, Adamasingba, Ibadan.
The Commissioner's pledge represents a boost to the initiative, which seeks to promote, preserve, document and showcase Yoruba cultural heritage while encouraging wider appreciation of headdresses across cultures.
During the visit, Olatunbosun expressed his commitment to supporting the event and ensuring that the forthcoming edition records remarkable success.
He also promised to incorporate the celebration into the activities of Vibing December, an Oyo State project introduced in 2025 to promote socio-cultural activities and engagements during the festive season.
Speaking during the visit, the Chairman of OYASI, Mr Olawale Ajao, expressed appreciation to the Commissioner for his consistent support for the global cultural initiative since its inception in 2024.
Ajao described the Commissioner as an active and accomplished public servant whose contributions to public administration and cultural development deserved recognition.
He recalled Olatunbosun's achievements during his time in the Ministry of Information, noting that his contributions had left an enduring mark on the ministry.
The OYASI chairman added that the Commissioner had continued to make significant contributions in his current portfolio as Commissioner for Culture and Tourism.
Earlier, the General Manager of the Council for Art and Culture, Mr Sikiru Adekunle Agboola, commended initiatives that create opportunities for people to develop and express their ideas. He said the ministry encouraged people with creative ideas and provided opportunities for them to bring those ideas to public attention.
The visiting OYASI delegation was led by Ajao and included Saheed Alatise, Nurudeen Adeyemi Olorire, Latifat Adejoke Adebola, Ethan Abanikannda, Boluwaji Olaniyi and Bejide Oladimeji.
The Commissioner's team included Mr S. A. Agboola, General Manager of the Council for Art and Culture; Mrs Titilayo Lawal, Director of Culture and Tourism; Mr A. O. Akinola, Director of Research; Mr A. A. Jimoh, Human Resource Manager; Mrs Ajoje, Director of Finance; Mrs Folashade Salam, Director of Cultural Troupe; Mrs Adeyemi, Director of Visual Art; and Mrs Ifamayowa Ifadeebo, Director of Tourism.
Other officials, tourism officers and members of the Amede Asa Crew were also present.
The Annual World Headdress Celebration, which began in 2024, is the flagship programme of OYASI. The organisation is working towards broader recognition of December 28 as World Headdress Day, with the aim of drawing global attention to the cultural significance of headwear and its place in the heritage of different peoples.
