Rumours have been circulating that Senator Iyabo Obasanjo has fled Nigeria following reports that her name may be removed from the list of candidates contesting for a senatorial seat under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), following a Supreme Court ruling.
According to the rumours, the former senator allegedly left the country for her previous overseas residence because she was uncertain about the outcome of the legal controversy and wanted to avoid potential embarrassment.
The controversy follows a recent Supreme Court ruling concerning Sections 77(3), (4), (5) and (6) of Nigeria’s Electoral Act. These provisions reportedly address party membership registration requirements and eligibility to participate as a candidate in an election under a political party.
Following the ruling, some politicians reportedly began expressing concerns about its possible implications for certain candidates, including Senator Iyabo Obasanjo, although the Supreme Court did not mention any individual by name.
This development allegedly fuelled rumours that Senator Obasanjo had fled the country out of embarrassment.
However, Mr Ayo Arowojolu, the media aide to Senator Iyabo Obasanjo, has dismissed the claims as completely false and misleading.
He explained that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) released the list of candidates yesterday and that Senator Iyabo Obasanjo's name was still on the list.
He also noted that this was not the first time the senator had travelled abroad and returned to Nigeria, stressing that her trip, if any, should not be interpreted as an attempt to flee the country.
Meanwhile, some observers have maintained that the true situation will become clearer in the coming days.
