The United Premier Movement (UPM) has lauded the Director General of the National Sports Commission (NSC) and Osi Asoju Oba of Egbaland, Hon. Bukola Olopade, for his instrumental role in attracting Federal Government attention to the long-neglected Muda Lawal Stadium, Asero, Abeokuta, culminating in the approval for its rehabilitation and modernization.
In a statement issued by the Convener of the Movement, Chief Olalekan A. Shoyinka (Ayinla Egba), and made available to newsmen through the Assistant Secretary of UPM, Hon. Sheriff Adenekan, the group described the development as another remarkable testament to Hon. Olopade’s enduring commitment to people-centered development and his unwavering passion for the progress of Egbaland, Ogun State and Nigeria as a whole.
According to the statement, while many public office holders are often remembered for personal achievements and political victories, Hon. Bukola Olopade has consistently distinguished himself through initiatives and interventions that directly impact the lives of the people, particularly in the areas of youth development, sports advancement, human capacity building and community development.
“The approval granted by the Federal Government for the rehabilitation of the historic Muda Lawal Stadium is not merely a sports project; it is an economic, social and developmental intervention that will positively impact thousands of youths, sports enthusiasts, coaches, entrepreneurs and residents of Ogun State. It is a legacy project that will restore the pride of Abeokuta as a major sporting destination in Nigeria,” the statement noted.
UPM further observed that for many years, the stadium, named after one of Nigeria’s greatest football icons and a proud son of Egbaland, had suffered neglect and deterioration despite its historical significance to Nigerian sports. The movement therefore described the planned revamp as both timely and commendable.
Chief Shoyinka noted that Hon. Olopade’s influence as Director General of the National Sports Commission has once again demonstrated what can be achieved when individuals in positions of authority remain connected to their roots and prioritize the collective good above personal interests.
“True leadership is measured not by titles held but by the positive footprints left behind. Hon. Bukola Olopade has consistently proven himself to be a worthy ambassador of Egbaland, a visionary administrator and a patriotic Nigerian whose focus remains on projects and policies that uplift the people.
“As sons and daughters of Egbaland, we are proud of this achievement and grateful that one of our own continues to utilize his office not for self-glorification but for the advancement of society. The rehabilitation of the Muda Lawal Stadium will stand as a lasting symbol of purposeful leadership and strategic advocacy.”
The Movement also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Federal Government for prioritizing sports infrastructure development under the Renewed Hope Agenda, describing sports as a powerful tool for youth empowerment, national unity, economic growth and talent discovery.
UPM expressed confidence that upon completion, the upgraded stadium would serve as a modern sporting hub capable of hosting national and international competitions while inspiring a new generation of athletes from Ogun State and beyond.
The Movement prayed for continued wisdom, strength and success for Hon. Bukola Olopade as he continues to discharge his national responsibilities and contribute meaningfully to the development of sports and humanity.
