Federation of Antigraft Organizations Commends EFCC on Arrest of Former Kogi State Governor Alhaji Yahya Bello

In a significant development that marks a victory for anti-corruption efforts in Nigeria, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has successfully apprehended the former governor of Kogi State, Alhaji Yahya Bello. This arrest comes after several months of evading the law, with Alhaji Yahya Bello facing serious allegations of money laundering, breach of trust, and the misappropriation of a staggering N80.2 billion during his eight-year tenure as governor from 2015 to 2023.
The Federation of Antigraft Organizations, represented by Comrade Kolawole Emmanuel and Secretary Chisom Obioha, commends the EFCC for its swift and decisive action in bringing Alhaji Yahya Bello to justice. This arrest sends a strong message that those who engage in corrupt practices will be held accountable for their actions, regardless of their status or influence.
In light of this development, the Federation of Antigraft Organizations has put forth a set of demands to ensure that justice is served and that the rule of law prevails:
- Commend EFCC for the arrest of Alhaji Yahya Bello.
- There should never be any plea bargain considered.
- No administrative bail should be granted to the accused.
- The Commission must vehemently oppose any bail application in Court.
- Alhaji Yahya Bello should be treated like any other common criminal arrested by the agency.
- Take his mugshot and publish it for transparency and accountability.
- Detain him in solitary confinement to prevent any undue influence.
- No presidential pardon should be entertained under any circumstances.
- Freeze all his accounts to prevent further financial misconduct.
- Arrest all his former aides who assisted him in committing the alleged crimes.
- Ensure a fair and professional prosecution process to secure conviction without any interference.
The Federation of Antigraft Organizations calls upon the EFCC to uphold the principles of integrity, transparency, and accountability throughout the legal proceedings against Alhaji Yahya Bello. It is imperative that the prosecution is conducted without bias or favoritism, and that all individuals involved in corrupt activities are held accountable for their actions.
Finally, the body cautioned that If any attempt is made to release Yahaya Bello under any circumstances, it will hit the streets with massive protests against the EFCC and the Federal Government. It urged Nigerians to look forward to its World Press Conference to address the situation in a more holistic manner soon.
